From Fox News: An illegal immigrant who once served as an aide to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has reportedly self-deported to Colombia, praising the “freedom of movement” in the South American nation after working in Congress despite being in the country illegally.

Diego de la Vega was born in Ecuador and immigrated to the United States as a 7-year-old in 2001 on a visitor’s visa that he overstayed, Migrant Insider reported.

The news raises thorny questions about his employment status for the Queens-based congresswoman.

Migrant Insider revealed how De la Vega worked his way up as an organizer and activist, and then ended up working for the Democrat socialist congresswoman’s re-election campaign.  However, DACA recipients are barred from serving as aides in Congress, so it appears he may have only worked on her campaign, but not as a congressional aide.

De la Vega’s LinkedIn account says he worked for Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign, from October 2022 through January 2025.

From Migrant Insider:

De la Vega became politically active after witnessing the failure of the Dream Act in 2010, when the bill fell just five votes short in the Senate. He started organizing for immigrant rights, first as a communications worker in the New York State Assembly, then for Make the Road NY, an immigrant rights organization. His first major victory came in 2021 when, as digital organizer for Make the Road, he helped secure a $2.1 billion fund that provided $15,000 relief checks to undocumented workers excluded from federal pandemic aid.

“That was direct money in people’s pockets,” recalled de la Vega, who by then had enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

His work did not go unnoticed. Within a year, he was hired by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s reelection campaign, where he eventually became her deputy communications director. “Alexandria comes from an organizing background herself, so she likes to hire people who share that experience,” he said. “She’s an excellent communicator, and the team she built is top-notch.”

De la Vega lamented that it was taking too long for “comprehensive immigration reform” or amnesty to be granted because Joe Biden “dropped the ball,” and DACA has “been on life support for years.”   Plus, his wife is an illegal alien as well.

“People infantilize Dreamers as youth, but I’m 31. I have a wife. We were thinking about children, but we had no certainty. I wanted to be somewhere where I wasn’t considered illegal, where I wasn’t persecuted by the state, where I was welcome. So in December, my wife and I moved to Bogotá. She was undocumented too, but without DACA, so she was far more vulnerable. In Colombia, I easily got a visa. We have a future here. We have rights. These were things we had been searching for—for 23 years,” he said.

On starting over in Colombia, de la Vega told Migrant Insider, “It’s bittersweet. I hadn’t left the country in 23 years — from age seven to age 30,” de la Vega told Migrant Insider. “Now, I can’t go back to the U.S. It feels like exile. It’s a very permanent move. But my wife and I are confident we made the right decision. And, after some time, it’s been a real pleasure to be here.”

“It feels surreal to not be illegalized anymore. I don’t have to live in the shadows or constantly worry about paperwork. That freedom of movement is incredibly satisfying. I might not be able to return to the United States for many years—I don’t know how long. But it feels fulfilling to be home,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez has faced heavy backlash after she hosted a webinar coaching illegal aliens on how to dodge ICE and avoid getting deported.  She has also posted propaganda on social media, advising illegal aliens to “know your rights.”

De la Vega re-posted the information.

Border Czar Tom Homan announced last month that he had sent a complaint to Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding AOC’s webinar, asking if this qualifies as ‘impediment.’

In an interview with NPR, AOC defended the webinar, by claiming, “I was giving advice to ALL of my constituents, yeah.”

In the same interview, AOC claimed that the only “problem” with immigration is that Republicans don’t want to give all illegal aliens a pathway to citizenship.

Clearly nervous, the Democrat socialist congresswoman then sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, asking if she is under investigation.

AOC tried to take on Homan during a congressional hearing in November… and lost.

“I’ve done this since 1984. I’ve forgot more about immigration law than @AOC will ever know,” Homan declared in a CNN interview last month.
