FROM NY POST: Jesús Montero, a former promising Yankees prospect and five-year major leaguer, has died at 35 after a motorcycle accident.

According to a GoFundMe that attempted to raise money for his hospital bills, Montero had been involved in the accident earlier this month in Venezuela and suffered severe injuries for which he was put into an induced coma. The Yankees, as well as a team in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, announced his death Sunday.

Montero was a rising minor leaguer with the Yankees and debuted in 2011 as the No. 1 prospect in their organization, a big-hitting catcher who had blasted 21 home runs with an .870 OPS in 123 games in Triple-A a year prior.

Montero played 18 major league games with the Yankees, and 226 major league games during his career, during which he hit .253 with a .693 OPS.
In an X post, MLP said, “ We join the baseball community in mourning the passing of former Major League player Jesús Montero.

“As a Minor League prospect, Montero appeared in the All-Star Futures game twice before debuting for the New York Yankees in September 2011. He posted a .996 OPS with 4 home runs and 12 RBI in 18 games and helped New York win the AL East Division title.

“In four seasons with Seattle from 2012-2015, the Venezuelan native hit 24 homers and drove in 92 runs across 208 games as a catcher, first baseman, and designated hitter.

“Montero was 35 years old.”
