Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Israel.
Huckabee, 69, a Baptist minister, served as Arkansas governor from 1996 to 2007. He was also a candidate for the Republican Party presidential nomination in both 2008 and 2016. Midway through the 2016 Republican primary season, Huckabee withdrew from the race and wholeheartedly endorsed then-candidate Donald Trump, and has been a staunch supporter ever since.
Just days after his Election Day victory in November, Trump announced his nomination of Huckabee to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Israel.
Huckabee was confirmed by the Senate Wednesday in a 53-46 vote, with only one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman (Pa.) joining Republicans to support him.
Huckabee’s daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, worked in the first Trump administration, and served as Trump’s White House Press Secretary. She is now the Governor of Arkansas, following in her father’s footsteps.
Gov. Sanders paid tribute to her father, writing, “The most important lesson my dad @GovMikeHuckabee ever taught me is to be who God created me to be. I could not be any more proud of my dad for returning to public service as Ambassador to Israel, and fulfilling the purpose God has for him.”
