From ABC News: The Trump administration is set to pay out nearly $5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of Ashli Babbitt, a rioter fatally shot during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to ABC News on Monday.
The settlement will resolve a $30 million suit brought by Babbitt’s estate and the conservative group Judicial Watch alleging the Capitol Police officer who shot her as she attempted to breach a broken window of the House speaker’s lobby was negligent in his duties.
The Washington Post first reported news on the settlement amount.
The Justice Department in April 2021 announced it had cleared U.S. Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd of any criminal wrongdoing in the shooting, after an investigation revealed no evidence he “did not reasonably believe that it was necessary to do so in self-defense or in defense of the Members of Congress and others evacuating the House Chamber.”
A separate investigation by the U.S. Capitol Police further found Byrd’s actions were “lawful and within Department policy” and that he would not face internal discipline.

Many conservatives are pointing out that George Floyd’s family got $27 million, which Democrats were perfectly fine with. But Babbitt’s family only received $5 million, and some Democrats are criticizing that settlement.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries blasted the settlement during a press conference Monday, calling it a slap in the face to the Capitol Police force. He also raged against President Trump for pardoning the January 6 prisoners, calling them “violent felons.”
No one asked him about all the liberal rioters who went on a violent rampage in cities across the nation in the summer of 2020, as they attacked police officers and even burned down police precincts.
Hakeem Jeffries (@RepJeffries) just called the settlement reached between the Babbitt family and the Trump DOJ a “slap in the face to the hard-working, courageous men and women of the United States police force.”

Hakeem Jeffries has a total meltdown because the family of Ashli Babbitt has been awarded about $5M for Michael Byrd wrong taking her life in the Capitol on J6.
Of course, Jeffries was fine with George Floyd’s family getting $27M. pic.twitter.com/HcuJpdKdlr

So George Floyd’s family got $27 million and that was justice. Ashli Babbitt’s family gets $5 million and suddenly it’s a problem? Maybe the issue isn’t the payout, it’s who they can’t turn into a political mascot.

George Floyd had a lengthy criminal record, held a gun to a pregnant woman’s stomach during a home invasion, and had enough fentanyl in his system to kill a stable when he died. His family received $27 million.

Below is one liberal meltdown over the settlement to Babbitt’s family. Warning: foul language.
She is outraged that the family of Ashli Babbitt is being awarded $5 million from the Trump administration.
She says that we don’t have money to feed or how the poor but we can give it to the family of ‘an insurrectionist who got what she deserved.’
