From The Hill: Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) was scammed Thursday by a group claiming to be a cleaning crew, according to authorities.
Multiple people claiming to be HVAC workers reportedly visited the delegate’s home and managed to charge her credit card. The case is being investigated as felony fraud, local outlets reported.
Norton paid the individuals $4,362 in total even though no work was performed, according to a police report obtained by NBC Washington. A friend ultimately called the credit card company to have the charges canceled.
In the report, police said they were told Norton is suffering from “early stages of dementia” and that the friend who called the police has the delegate’s power of attorney.
Norton’s office said in a statement to NBC Washington, “The Congresswoman employs a house manager who oversees all maintenance services, so she initially assumed her staff had arranged the visit and provided her credit card for payment.”
After the house manager realized they had been scammed, they reportedly notified police, who are now investigating the incident.
Norton’s office is now trying to shut down the report that she is suffering from dementia, saying, “The medical diagnosis included in the police report was based on an assumption the reporting officer was unqualified to make.”
Norton, 88, has been represented Washington, D.C. as a congressional delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991 – over 34 years.
