NEWS ALERT: Democrat flips Georgia state House seat in district Trump won

From The Hill: Democrats on Tuesday flipped a state House seat in a red-leaning district in Georgia, delivering the party another notable win heading into next year’s midterms.

Democrat Eric Gisler was projected to defeat Republican Mack Guest IV in the special election in Georgia’s House District 121, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Gisler’s victory is a major upset, as President Trump won the district last year by 12 points, according to DDHQ. Democrats were hopeful they could score an upset after overperforming in a recent Tennessee special election. They also flipped two seats on the Georgia Public Service Commission in November, sending shockwaves through the state’s political circles.

It was the second big win for the party on Tuesday night; earlier, Democrats flipped the Miami mayor’s office, breaking GOP control for the first time in nearly three decades.

DNC Chair Ken Martin cheered, “Rep-elect Gisler’s victory is more proof of our momentum—including in districts that Trump won by double digits. Fresh off this win and last month’s victories in the GA Public Service Commissioner races, the DNC will continue to invest and organize in every corner of Georgia.”
