From PoliticoLocal governments in California will be barred from establishing local laws that require residents present identification to vote in elections under a new law signed Sunday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The legislation — from state Sen. Dave Min, an Orange County Democrat running for Rep. Katie Porter’s open House seat — is a direct response to a controversial ballot measure approved this year by voters in Huntington Beach requiring people to show photo identification at the polls. It will take effect on Jan. 1.

California is one of 14 states that does not require voter ID at the polls, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The Republican-led city, whose leaders often tussle with Sacramento Democrats, has maintained that its status as a charter city gives it home rule over elections administration.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, both far-left Democrats, had filed a lawsuit against the city of Huntington Beach in April, claiming that the voter ID law “interferes with state voting rights protections.”

“The right to freely cast your vote is the foundation of our democracy and Huntington Beach’s voter ID policy flies in the face of this principle,” Bonta claimed, adding, “Imposing unnecessary obstacles to voter participation disproportionately burdens low-income voters, voters of color, young or elderly voters, and people with disabilities.”

Laura Powell, an attorney with Californians for Good Governance, blasted Newsom as she released the following statement:

“Last year, the Huntington Beach City Council passed an ordinance requiring voters to show identification at the polls, and the California Attorney General sued. Now Governor Newsom has signed a law banning such local ordinances throughout the state.

“It really looks bad for Democrats that they’ve allowed voting integrity to become a partisan issue. Since voters have to provide identification to register, and mail-in ballots are wildly available, what is the argument that requiring identification presents any sort of barrier? The law cites “historical disenfranchisement,” but that has nothing to do with the situation in the present day.”

Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Calif.) wrote, “Governor Newsom just blocked local governments from requiring voter ID. With less than half of Americans confident in our elections and nearly 80% supporting photo ID to vote, it’s clear we need change. That’s why I introduced the Voter Integrity and Defense Act to encourage states to implement voter ID laws. Americans deserve secure and fair elections.”

Turning Point Action reacted to the news, writing, “Democrats do not care about election integrity!”

Fox Business anchor Elizabeth MacDonald wrote, “California Gov Newsom & the 14 states that don’t require voter ID are at odds with dozens of countries overseas that do require #voter #ID. You need ID for dozens of things, too, to open a bank account, rent a car or adopt a pet – why not to vote?”

Prominent conservative X user, Travis, posted a list of controversial decisions being made across the country, just weeks ahead of the November election. He wrote:

To anyone who says that democrats aren’t planning on cheating:

– Biden’s DOJ sued Alabama for removing noncitizens from the voter rolls
– Gavin Newsom signed a bill blocking local governments from requiring an ID to vote
– Democrats in Michigan sued to keep RFK jr on the ballot to hurt Trump
– Biden’s DOJ sued Texas to allow illegals into the country
– Democrats are calling for mass amnesty and citizenship on a scale never before seen in modern American history
– Democrats in Congress blocked the SAVE which would’ve added measures to ensure Voter ID nationwide

Why are we allowing this?

In another post, Travis noted, “At Costco they now require your face match your membership card to verify you’re a customer. That means that it’s harder to shop at Costco illegally than it is to vote in a US federal election.”

Elon Musk wrote, “Wow, it is now illegal to require voter ID in California! They just made PREVENTING voter fraud against the law. The Joker is in charge.”
