NEWS ALERT: Blue state voters reject new Republican-backed voter ID requirement, absentee voting changes

From the Associated Press: Voters in Maine have rejected a sweeping proposal centered on voter ID. The initiative would implement a photo ID requirement for voters, limit the use of drop boxes for returning completed ballots and make changes to the state’s absentee voting system.

The measure was one of two Republican-backed initiatives under consideration by voters on Tuesday that proponents said would safeguard elections and opponents claimed were intended to make voting more difficult or address issues that aren’t major problems.

Voters in Texas, where Republicans control the government, approved a proposal that would amend the state constitution to add “persons who are not citizens of the United States” to the list of those excluded from participating in elections.

The Maine proposal stated that it also would eliminate two days of absentee voting, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities and limit the number of drop boxes in the state, among other changes.

The report notes that Maine Gov. Janet Mills spoke out against the voter ID initiative, claiming it was an attack on the right to vote.

Steve Robinson, editor of The Maine Wire, explained:

Over 170,000 people signed the Voter ID petition in Maine to get it on the ballot, but Yes on One votes are projected to be far fewer as Voter ID loses tonight in Maine.

The proposed language combined complex absentee ballot rules with simple Voter ID, a tactical blunder. This let Democrats frame the No campaign as “saving absentee voting,” weakening support for a popular election integrity measure. Donors saw the flaw, and Yes on One lacked funding. A simple Voter ID measure would likely have gained more votes, given its popularity in Maine, and could have impacted Question 2 (gun control) with a proper ad campaign. The flawed question allowed Shenna Bellows to issue biased language, causing disunity and pessimism among supporters.

If conservative disunity persists, Maine will slide further into a third-world mess, a crony capitalist mafia state, and a haven for progressive scams. (The three are related.)

On the bright side, the effort forced Democrats to spend heavily to protect non-citizen and Alzheimer’s patient vote harvesting. And… with Election Day past, Inspector Bellows might finally investigate how UPS Teamsters ended up distributing absentee ballots in Amazon Prime packages.

FLASHBACK to 2022: Maine’s Democrat Gov. Janet Mills claimed voter ID was not needed.  She is now running for U.S. Senate, seeking to oust Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
