From the Daily Caller: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, sparred Wednesday with Elon Musk over funding for a Trump-backed AI infrastructure project one day after he stood with the president in the White House to announce the project.

Musk, replying to an OpenAI tweet about the initial round of funding for the project, wrote “They don’t actually have the money.”

He claimed that Soft Bank, one of the three companies who had a representative next to Trump during his Tuesday announcement, did not have even one tenth of the proposed initial funding.

“SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority,” Musk tweeted early Wednesday morning.

Altman, along with fellow billionaires Oracle CEO Larry Ellison and Soft Bank CEO Masayoshi Son, had appeared with President Trump at a press briefing at the White House Tuesday to announce the $500 billion Stargate Project.

However, Elon Musk and Sam Altman are not the best of friends. Far from it.  The Daily Caller explains that Musk was an original co-founder of OpenAI, along with Altman and Peter Thiel, when the three established the company in 2015.  The relationship fell apart over plans to take the company public, and Musk left the board of directors in 2018.

Since then, Musk has been highly critical of Altman and OpenAI and now has his own AI startup called xAI.

Tuesday, after the White House announcement, Musk responded to a post by OpenAI, which read:

The Stargate Project is a new company which intends to invest $500 billion over the next four years building new AI infrastructure for OpenAI in the United States. We will begin deploying $100 billion immediately. This infrastructure will secure American leadership in AI, create hundreds of thousands of American jobs, and generate massive economic benefit for the entire world. This project will not only support the re-industrialization of the United States but also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies.

The initial equity funders in Stargate are SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. SoftBank and OpenAI are the lead partners for Stargate, with SoftBank having financial responsibility and OpenAI having operational responsibility. Masayoshi Son will be the chairman.

Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI are the key initial technology partners. The buildout is currently underway, starting in Texas, and we are evaluating potential sites across the country for more campuses as we finalize definitive agreements.

As part of Stargate, Oracle, NVIDIA, and OpenAI will closely collaborate to build and operate this computing system. This builds on a deep collaboration between OpenAI and NVIDIA going back to 2016 and a newer partnership between OpenAI and Oracle.

This also builds on the existing OpenAI partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI will continue to increase its consumption of Azure as OpenAI continues its work with Microsoft with this additional compute to train leading models and deliver great products and services.

All of us look forward to continuing to build and develop AI—and in particular AGI—for the benefit of all of humanity. We believe that this new step is critical on the path, and will enable creative people to figure out how to use AI to elevate humanity.

Then Musk then called them out, claiming Open AI doesn’t have the money to fund this project:

Altman first responded to Musk, “I genuinely respect your accomplishments and think you are the most inspiring entrepreneur of our time.”

Then Altman slapped Musk down, writing, “Wrong, as you surely know. Want to come visit the first site already under way? This is great for the country. I realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role I hope you’ll mostly put 🇺🇸 first.”

The Daily Caller points out that while Musk spent over a quarter of a billion dollars to help Trump’s presidential election, Altman has been a Democrat donor, doling out over $1 million to Democrats, including over $200,000 to Joe Biden.

In October 2016, Altman wrote in a Twitter post, “Back to work tomorrow on a new project to stop Trump.”

Altman’s social media account is literally filled with anti-Trump posts.

In March 2017, at the beginning of Trump’s first term in office, Altman wrote, “I think Trump is terrible and few things would make me happier than him not being president.”

In March 2022, Altman wrote, “I still don’t think most Democrats realize how ugly the 2022 elections may be, or how possible it is that Trump could win in 2024.”

After the assassination attempt against Trump in July 2024, Altman did write, “Very glad President Trump is safe!”

Appearing to address criticism of his previous anti-Trump positions, Altman wrote on X Wednesday evening, “Watching @potus more carefully recently has really changed my perspective on him (i wish i had done more of my own thinking and definitely fell in the npc trap). I’m not going to agree with him on everything, but I think he will be incredible for the country in many ways!”

Musk is continuing to call out Altman, commenting on posts by other X users.

Altman testified before Congress in May 2023 that he makes no money from OpenAI, but is simply “doing this because I love it.”

Musk pointed to a Reuters report, which states that Altman will profit from OpenAI. The company has been changed from a non-profit to a for-profit, and Altman new reportedly gets 7% of the profits.

Musk also re-tweeted a post by Mike Cernovich, who pointed out Altman’s connection to LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman – who said after the assassination attempt on Trump in July, “Yeah, I wish I had made Trump an actual martyr.”

Reid Hoffman also helped fund E.Jean Carroll’s lawsuit against Trump.

Altman praised Hoffman in December 2021, writing on Twitter, “Very few people realize just how much @reidhoffman did and spent to stop Trump from getting re-elected–it seems reasonably likely to me that Trump would still be in office without his efforts. Thank you, Reid!”

Mario Nawfal also noted that Altman has helped fund the liberal news outlet, Axios.

Mike Cernovich also wrote, “Sam Altman hired Clinton henchman Chris Lehane to run OpenAI’s political shop. Chris Lehane was responsible for anti-Trump smears and is loyal to the far left.”

Thursday morning, Altman appeared to react to all the social media buzz about himself, as he wrote, “Just one more mean tweet and then maybe you’ll love yourself…”

Meanwhile, a video has surfaced of comments Musk made about OpenAO and Sam Altman during an interview with Tucker Carlson.

Another another:

And here’s something else even more chilling. A post from Tucker Carlson on January 15 reads: “Suchir Balaji worked as an engineer for Sam Altman building AI, until he decided that Altman was committing crimes. Balaji became a whistleblower, and soon after was found dead in his apartment. California authorities claim it was suicide. Crime scene photos clearly show a murder. Balaji’s mother, Poornima Ramarao, tells the most shocking story we’ve heard in a long time.”
