The Kamala Harris/Tim Walz campaign’s policy page confirms their commitment to overturn pro-life state laws and support abortion access nationwide.

Harris vowed to sign legislation reinstating federal abortion rights if elected, referring to this as “reproductive freedom,” which includes medication and dismemberment abortions.

“As President, she will never allow a national abortion ban to become law. And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom nationwide, she will sign it,” the policy page reads.

Following the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats have pushed to restore Roe v. Wade, aiming to federalize abortion rights again. They’ve repeatedly tried to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act, which opponents, including Sen. Joe Manchin, argue expands Roe and could allow abortion throughout pregnancy. Both Biden and Harris have pledged to sign it.

While abortion remains Harris’s top campaign issue, polls show it’s not a priority for most voters. However, one in four Democrats are single-issue voters on abortion, and most independents identify as “pro-choice.”

The focus on abortion may also be a strategy to shift attention from economic and border concerns under the Biden-Harris administration. The Harris/Walz policy page asserts they “trust women to make decisions about their own bodies,” without addressing the unborn lives affected by abortion.

It inaccurately labels pro-life laws as “Trump abortion bans” and criticizes Trump for appointing the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade. They also claim Trump will seek to “ban abortion nationwide,” restrict birth control, and jeopardize IVF access, though he has not made such promises.

Former President Donald Trump has consistently stated that abortion should be decided by individual states and supports exceptions for rape, incest, and the mother’s life. Notably, abortions have increased since states gained control over the issue.

The Harris/Walz campaign released its policy page seven weeks after entering the 2024 race.
