An active shooter situation was reported in Midtown Manhattan in New York City on Monday evening.

Police say he has now been “neutralized.”

KOAA reports:

According to the Associated Press, who cites individuals familiar with the investigation on condition of anonymity, at least two people, one of them a New York City police officer, have been injured in the incident. The conditions of the victims were not known

According to the Fire Department of New York, a caller reported someone had been shot around 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time and summoned emergency services to the Park Avenue office building.

The building houses the headquarters of the National Football League, as well as offices of Blackrock Financial Management and the Blackstone investment company.

FBI agents responded to scene, according to a X post by the bureau’s deputy director, Don Bongino.

“FBI New York Field Office management personnel and agents are responding to provide support at the active crime scene in Manhattan,” he said.

Police in the area were checking cars, as the area was locked down. New York City Mayor Eric Adams warned on X for civilians to stay out of the area.

“New Yorkers: there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now,” Adams wrote. “Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul also acknowledged the incident.

“I’ve been briefed on an active shooter situation in midtown Manhattan,” she said on X.

Employees in a nearby building were warned to shelter in place and to stay away from windows, NBC News reports.

A message was broadcast on the fifth floor of 399 Park Ave., according to video taken by witness Kathleen Benant at the scene.

“An incident has occurred outside of the building,” the message said. “Please stay inside, shelter in place, stay away from the windows until further instructions from the NYPD.”

“Some people came running back inside saying people were shouting on the street that there was an active shooter,” Benant said. “I had a bit of a ptsd response that came out of the blue,” she said in a message. “I lived through 9/11 and all the sights/sounds reminded me of that day. I’m ok now.”

Later Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said on X, “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,”

NBC News reports that the gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, citing four senior New York City officials.
