House GOP hardliners are angry over congressional leaders’ handling of government funding talks, with some threatening to withdraw support for Speaker Mike Johnson.

Negotiators are working on a short-term funding extension, a continuing resolution (CR), to prevent a partial shutdown. A bill must pass by Friday, Dec. 20, to avoid a holiday shutdown.

“The speaker definitely has some ‘no’ votes and some people considering their options,” one anonymous GOP lawmaker told Fox News Digital. The lawmaker accused Johnson of using Trump’s support as cover, noting Johnson previously won unanimous backing in closed-door GOP elections after Trump endorsed him.

In January, Johnson will need nearly the same level of support when the full House votes for speaker. With a slim majority, he can only afford to lose a few GOP votes to retain the gavel.

Former House Freedom Caucus Chair Scott Perry, R-Pa., told Fox News it’s potentially a possibility some Republicans could oppose Speaker Johnson on Jan. 3, depending on his handling of the CR. Another Republican admitted Trump’s backing is the main reason they’re holding off on opposing Johnson. Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., added, “Everything’s got consequences,” regarding the January vote.
