Billionaire Elon Musk is doubling down on his suggestion to create a new political party in the United States, in an indication that he has soured on Republicans.
During his bitter public feud with President Donald Trump on Thursday, Musk posted a poll, asking if there should be a new political party started.
“Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?” Musk asked.
The poll, which was left open for 24 hours, got 5,630,775 votes. The results:
- 80.4% – Yes
- 19.6% – No

Friday evening, after the poll had concluded, Musk announced, “The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree 😂 This is fate.”

He then suggested the new political party should be called “The America Party.”

Not everyone is actually on board with the idea, despite the 80% win.
X user Capt. Kuehne, a retired U.S. Marine combat veteran, provided some advice:
Let’s take a look at Data over Destiny for a moment. While the “idea” of The America Party resonates with many, history and data suggest third parties face steep challenges in the U.S. so I prefer a more pragmatic approach. I agree with @DataRepublican that the data never lies.
In 2016, the Libertarian Party got 3.3% of the vote (4.5M votes) but zero electoral votes due to the winner-takes-all system. Since 1852, no third party has won the presidency—structural barriers like ballot access and funding favor the two-party system.
Even Perot in ‘92 (19% popular vote) couldn’t break through. A new party risks splitting votes, not winning. Data over destiny?
The America Party idea is bold, but the X poll’s reach is limited. It’s just 2.17% of the voting-age pop (5.6M/260M) per the most recent census. X users skew younger & more engaged (Pew 2023), inflating “Yes” votes—selection & engagement bias at play. Claiming “80% of people agree” overstates the mandate when only 3.32% of 2024 voters (169.8M) weighed in. This poll is negatively skewed and numbers don’t lie!

Shawn Farash added:
Great idea in concept. But you need more than an idea to launch a viable political party in the US. Then you need staff, donors, competent people who know what they’re doing, all the associated costs for lawyers, ballot access etc.
This is why it’s better to take over the existing GOP than build a new party. Infrastructure is already in place. All of the upfront work is finished.
The problem is nobody stays committed to doing that. Too much apathy.

IT Guy also offered some advice to Musk:
I will always immensely appreciate everything you did to save the country, not the least of which was freeing Twitter from the Censorship Industrial Complex.
You are a hero and a patriot, but you are NOT reading the room. A 3rd political party will get about as far as the Green Party.
Make peace with Trump and find a way to stay in the game.

X user Pro America Politics asked:
What’s your party’s position on abortion? Gun rights? Immigration? DEI? Trans rights? Israel? Ukraine? What are you gonna do with Medicaid and Social Security? Are you gonna raise taxes? I don’t think this is gonna be as easy as you think it is buddy, but go ahead.

One X user warned what could happen if Musk created another political party, and Musk appears to agree that it might not work out so well.
Yeah, pretty much 🤣🤣

Political commentator Joey Mannarino quipped, “That sounds cool and all but can you do that after you fix the X algorithm?”
