Proverbs 17:7

Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool—
how much worse lying lips to a ruler!

[From the New International Version]

Proverbs 17:7 highlights the importance of integrity in both speech and leadership. It begins by stating that “eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool,” suggesting that persuasive or refined speech is inappropriate for someone lacking wisdom or moral grounding. Such a person’s words lack substance and credibility.

The verse then intensifies this point by saying, “how much worse lying lips to a ruler!” This underscores that dishonesty is even more damaging when it comes from someone in a position of authority. A ruler’s lies can lead to greater harm because their words hold significant power and influence.

Overall, the verse teaches that integrity is essential in personal conduct and leadership. It warns against the dangers of dishonesty and highlights the greater responsibility of those in positions of authority to speak truthfully.
