Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

[From the New International Version]

This prophetic verse describes the suffering of Jesus Christ, who bore the sins of humanity. He absorbed and took on the consequences of humanity’s wrongdoings.

The “punishment” he endured brought peace, motioning his suffering to restore a broken relationship between God and people. The phrase “by his wounds we are healed” conveys that spiritual healing and redemption are made possible for those who believe through his sacrifice.

Overall, this verse emphasizes the selfless, redemptive nature of Jesus’s suffering for the sake of others’ salvation.
