Isaiah 53:5
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
[New International Version]
This verse is a prophecy about the suffering of Jesus Christ. It speaks of him taking on the punishment for humanity’s sins, symbolized by being “pierced” and “crushed.”
His suffering is described as bringing peace and reconciliation between God and humanity, showing the self-sacrificial nature of his mission. The verse emphasizes that his wounds and sacrifice make spiritual healing and restoration possible.
It conveys the profound idea of substitutionary atonement, where the Messiah bears the consequences of sin for the benefit of others.
