POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He taught the people. They were amazed at His teaching, because His words had authority.

In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

All the people were astonished and said to each other, “What is this teaching? With authority and power He gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” And the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding area.

Luke 4:31-37

Jesus Has Authority Over Chaos

In a quiet Capernaum synagogue, evil made a desperate stand. A man, bound by an impure spirit, erupted in chaos—accusing, fearing, revealing the hidden terror of the demonic realm. Into that turmoil stepped Jesus with a command that sliced through the chaos like a sword: “Be quiet! Come out of him!”

Pure, devine authority — and the demon was powerless. The crowd marveled, whispering about this man who tamed the untamable. In that moment, Luke paints a vivid portrait of Christ’s dominion over sickness, sin, and the very forces that seek to corrupt God’s good creation. It’s a reminder that the world’s chaos, violence, divisions, and unseen battles never have the final word. Jesus speaks, and the strongholds crumble.

Today, that same authority offers peace during our sorrow. In Glendale, Arizona, nearly 100,000 souls will gather for the memorial service of Charlie Kirk, a bold warrior for truth, faith, family, and freedom, silenced by an assassin’s bullet.

When Charlie’s life ended, he left behind a young wife, Erika, who will have to be a source of comfort to their two small children even as she is devastated by his loss; a movement, Turning Point USA, left mourning its founder and seeking to honor his mission; and a nation, the Unites States, grappling with the dread of political violence and social unrest.

In the assassin’s senseless act of hate, we see the evil of a fallen world. But with our prayers and petitions, we hear the demon’s cry, “Have you come to destroy us?” Evil fears the light of those who echo Christ’s call for justice and righteousness.

Charlie’s unapologetic stand for God and biblical values in a secular world made him a target, but there is hope. The risen Christ has authority, and Charlie’s death planted a seed. It has inspired new followers of Christ, it has opened blind eyes, and it has softened hard hearts.

The Kingdom advances not by might, but by the Spirit’s power (Zechariah 4:6). Even as the world seems to be irreconcialbly divided, Jesus’ voice still thunders, “Be quiet! Come out,” driving division and hatred away.

As we look to the future, remember that the God who silenced chaos in Capernaum still reigns over our trials today. Christ’s authority builds legacies that outlast bullets.

In the wake of the chaos stirred by an act of malice, we pray that Charlie’s movement will endure, his family will be cared for, and our nation will shift toward revival.

Our hope lies in the quiet certainty that the Holy One wins in the end.

Lord Jesus, Author of all authority, we stand in the shadow of loss today, hearts heavy for Charlie Kirk’s family and our nation. As we remember Charlie’s zeal for Your truth, silence the lying spirits that breed violence and fear in our land. We worship You as You quiet the chaos, heal the broken, and send Your Spirit of hope to reassure us of a future where Your Kingdom reigns. Strengthen Erika and her children, spark a fire in the hearts of the people of our nation to seek Your will, and – be it Your will – multiply Charlie’s unfinished work through a thousand emboldened voices. May we live unafraid, heeding Your command to spread Your Word as every demon flees. In Your victorious name we pray, AMEN.
