When You’re Sad

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

Sadness can feel like a heavy blanket that settles over your soul. Some days it arrives quietly, like a slow fog. Other days, sadness crashes in like a wave. You might feel alone in it, as if no one truly understands how deep the ache goes, but God is never distant from your sorrow. He draws especially near when your heart is breaking.

Jesus Himself knew sadness. The Bible tells us He wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus (John 11:35). The Man of Sorrows (Isaiah 53:3) was acquainted with grief, not because He lacked power, but because He chose to enter fully into our human experience. Your tears do not surprise Him. They do not offend Him. They matter to Him.

When sadness lingers, it’s easy to believe the lie that you must snap out of it quickly or hide it away. But Scripture invites us to bring our sadness honestly before God instead of pretending it isn’t there.

Sadness does not have the final word. God specializes in turning mourning into dancing. He is already at work redeeming your pain.

You are not alone in your sadness. You are not forgotten in your sadness. You are deeply loved in your sadness.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”
— Matthew 5:4 (NIV)

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You that I don’t have to hide my sadness from You. You see every tear and You care. Draw near to me right now in this heavy place. Hold my heart when it feels too fragile to keep beating. Remind me of Your presence when I feel alone. Give me the courage to keep going, even if it’s just one small step at a time. I trust that You are the God who comforts and restores. Turn my sorrow into something beautiful in Your time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
