Making Room for Jesus

10 The Word was in the world, and the world was made by him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to the world that was his own, but his own people did not accept him.

John 1:10-11

You’ve likely had occasion to run into a “No Vacancy” sign glowing in front of a motel somewhere. These signs are simple yet poignant—they mean there’s no room left.

This image mirrors a sobering reality not just in accommodations but within hearts. Sometimes, people’s hearts display an invisible “No Vacancy” sign. Certain groups might not make room for someone who doesn’t fit their mold—someone different in some way. Anywhere you go, it’s possible for tight-knit circles to unintentionally overlook newcomers aching for connection.

John 1:10-11 reveals the ultimate expression of this heart condition. Jesus, the Creator of the world, stepped into His creation, yet many did not recognize or receive Him. Imagine that—the very Savior, knocking on hearts, only to find “No Vacancy” signs flashing back.

As we journey through this Advent season, we must ask: Is there room in your heart for the Lord Jesus?

Life gets crowded—filled with family gatherings, work demands, social commitments, and the hustle of daily routines. But amidst the busyness, we’re invited to pause and consider: Have I made space for Jesus in my life? And beyond that, am I making room for others who need to experience His love through me?

This Christmas, let’s take down the “No Vacancy” sign on our lives and hearts. Let’s open wide the doors for Jesus to dwell richly within us. And as His love fills us, may we extend that warmth and acceptance to others who are longing for friendship, hope, and belonging.

Lord Jesus, thank You for being such a beautiful example of love and sacrifice, and forgive us for the times we’ve crowded You out. So often, our hearts are filled with distractions, leaving little room for You and for those who need Your love through us. Fill our hearts with Your presence this season and always. Teach us to welcome others with the same grace You’ve shown us. In Your precious name we pray, AMEN.
