Wonder

Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Luke 2:19

Our sacred role, our divine assignment, is to delight, to marvel, and to stand in reverent admiration of God’s handiwork. This precious task was entrusted to none other than the crown of God’s creation: humankind.

In Luke 2:29, we glimpse this sacred work embodied in Mary. Amid the flurry of miraculous events—a divine conception, the birth of the Savior, the arrival of shepherds bearing tales of angelic choirs—Mary did something extraordinary. She paused.

She treasured these moments and pondered them deeply in her heart. Her response wasn’t hurried action but heartfelt reflection.

Earlier, during her visit to her cousin Elizabeth, Mary found a kindred spirit in the work of wonder (Luke 1:39-56). Together, they celebrated God’s miraculous deeds in their lives, not rushing past them but soaking in the joy and significance of each moment.

Today, this assignment extends to you. Consider the beauty that surrounds you: the gift of a new day, the simple wonders of creation, and the profound reality of God’s love demonstrated through His Son. In the midst of the season’s busyness, can you accept this divine invitation to pause? To reflect, to remember, and to marvel?

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me a life worth living, for providing many blessings, and for establishing in me the ability to wonder and marvel at all of the many miracles You have created. Help me put away the idol of busyness, Lord. Prepare me for the sacred assignment of being in awe of You and all You have done. Open my eyes to see Your wonders anew. In your Son Jesus’ precious Name I pray, AMEN.
