Why We Worship
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.
Psalm 40:3 (NIV)
Worship isn’t about what we get from God, but about declaring His glory.
Our primary purpose in life—the very reason we worship God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit—is simply because of who He is. We were created to worship Him for His infinite worthiness, holiness, and majesty. Yet, in our daily lives, our worship can often reflect the ups and downs of our circumstances. It’s easy to pour out fervent praise when life is going well—when finances are stable, relationships are strong, and everything feels “in our favor.” We walk into gatherings excited, ready to sing and lift our hands.
But true worship shines brightest in the trials. When hardship, financial crisis, persecution, or despair hits, our choice to praise becomes a powerful testimony.
Psalm 40:3 reminds us that God lifts us from the “slimy pit” and places a new song in our mouths—not just in good times, but especially when we’ve reached the end of ourselves.
In weakness, His strength is perfected (2 Corinthians 12:9).
It honors God profoundly when we bless Him with our mouths amid pain. Praise and thanksgiving are vehicles of worship that shift our focus from circumstances to His constant presence. We don’t wait for Sunday or a crisis to acknowledge Him; we cultivate awareness of His Spirit daily, becoming beings of worship rather than just doing worship occasionally.
In seasons of trial, commanding our souls to praise—”Bless the Lord, O my soul” (Psalm 103)—invites breakthrough. It’s not based on emotion or feeling, but on choice: magnifying His goodness, mercy, and love. This is worship personified.
Father God, thank You for Your majesty and holiness. You are worthy of all praise simply because You are holy, loving, and faithful. Put a new song in our mouths today, especially in trials. Help us become living worship, honoring You continually and leading others to trust You. In Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN.
