MORNING DEVOTIONAL (August 29)

Ezra 4:1-3

When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel, they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, “Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.” But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.”

Be strong in the LORD

As the returned exiles worked to rebuild the temple, they faced opposition disguised as cooperation. The adversaries in Ezra 4:1-3 offered to help, claiming a shared faith, but their motives were suspect. Zerubbabel and the leaders discerned the danger and stood firm, prioritizing God’s command and their distinct calling over compromise.

This passage reminds us that obedience to God’s purpose often requires courage to say “no” to distractions or deceptive offers, even when they appear friendly or helpful. This morning, consider the work God has called you to—whether it’s in your relationships, work, or personal growth. Are there voices or influences that seem supportive but might pull you away from God’s plan? Like Zerubbabel, trust God’s guidance to discern what aligns with His will and stand firm in your commitment to follow Him alone.

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to Your purpose. Give me discernment to recognize distractions and courage to stand firm in Your truth. Help me to focus on the work You’ve entrusted to me, trusting Your guidance above all else. May my actions today honor You and advance Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
