Honoring God’s Order
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
Romans 13:1 (ESV)
In a world where authority is often questioned or challenged, the Bible offers a clear and different way to look at things: to respect and follow those God has chosen to lead.
This isn’t about blindly following orders or agreeing with everything they do, but about understanding that all real authority comes from God. Paul wrote these words when he was under Roman rule—a government that was often harsh, corrupt, and not very friendly to Christians. But instead of encouraging rebellion or disrespect, he encouraged believers to be good citizens, paying taxes, showing respect, and doing good things. Why? Because fighting against rightful authority is really fighting against God’s plan for things (Romans 13:2).
By respecting leaders—whether they’re presidents, governors, bosses, pastors, teachers, or parents—we show that we trust God’s power and bring glory to His name.
In the same way, children are told to honor their parents (Ephesians 6:1-3), employees are told to respect their bosses (Ephesians 6:5-8), and church members are told to obey their spiritual leaders who care for their souls (Hebrews 13:17). In every area, following orders shows that we are ultimately following Christ, who gave up everything, even to the cross, to do what the Father wanted (Philippians 2:8).
When human authority tells us to disobey God, we should say with the apostles, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). But even then, our resistance should be respectful, peaceful, and ready to face the consequences, not because we are angry or proud.
Heavenly Father, thank You for establishing order in our world through authority. Forgive me for the times I’ve resisted or spoken disrespectfully about those You’ve placed over me. Help me to see leaders through Your eyes—as instruments of Your purpose, even when imperfect. Give me wisdom to discern when submission honors You and courage to obey You above all. May my life reflect Christ-like respect, that others might see Your goodness and order through me. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
