James 5:16

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

[King James version]

This verse is a precious reminder of just how powerful prayer is. First, it says to confess our faults to one another. God is the one we confess ALL our faults to, but we should be genuine and honest with others. If we have hurt or offended someone else, or committed a fault against them, we should confess that and ask forgiveness.

“…. and pray for one another, that YOU may be healed.” Praying for others is good for the person we’re praying for, but it’s equally healing for ourselves. It’s hard to hold a grudge or be angry with someone you’re sincerely praying for. In all relationships, when we pray for each other, we learn to love them more.

Prayer softens hearts, changes attitudes, opens doors, and breaks down walls. Prayer clears our vision, erases doubts, and calms fears. Prayer helps us to see things from God’s perspective, instead of our own selfish wants. Prayer helps us focus on what’s really important, and what doesn’t matter.

The hymn below includes the line, “What a privilege to carry everything to Him in prayer….”

“Dear Heavenly Father, today we’re thankful for the privilege of prayer, and thankful that You know our needs before we even ask. Give us the grace today just to say, ‘Not my will, but Thine be done.’ Help us to encourage one another, and keep the light of Christ shining in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we beg. Amen.”
