THE POWER OF PRAYER
Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
–1 Samuel 1:19-20
For years, Hannah endured the constant teasing of her rival wife, Peninnah, while praying and hoping for a child.
Every year, she would make her pilgrimage to the tabernacle, where she would pray an emotional appeal to God. She promised that if God would grant her a son, she would dedicate him entirely to the Lord.
In 1 Samuel 1:19–20, we witness the quiet yet powerful fulfillment of that prayer. God remembered her.
In biblical terms, “the Lord remembered her” signifies His active involvement and intervention in fulfilling His promises. This remembrance reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His impeccable timing, even when it feels like a painful delay. He doesn’t solely focus on our immediate desires; He has a larger, more purposeful plan in mind.
When Hannah gave birth, she named her son Samuel, which means “heard by God” or “asked of God.” The name was a living testament to God’s faithfulness. Every time she said her son’s name, she and everyone who heard it were reminded that God had listened to her prayer.
But the most important part is that when He fulfilled that faithful request, it wasn’t just for Hannah’s benefit; He had a greater plan for the entire nation. Samuel became a great prophet who helped Israel establish a kingdom.
When we trust God, He may use our desires for something even greater than we could ever imagine. Trust in God’s larger plan. When you pray, be open and honest with God, sharing your feelings, tears, and struggles.
Remember that His timing is perfect. Even if we don’t receive an immediate response, we must remain faithful, worshiping the Lord and patiently waiting for Him. Hannah’s story can be a source of inspiration.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the story of Hannah. It reminds us of Your faithfulness. Help us to desire a relationship with You in which we pray with our entire heart, sharing our deepest dreams and sorrows with You honestly. Give us the faith to worship You even when we’re waiting, trusting that Your timing is perfect and Your purposes are greater than ours. In Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN.
