Matthew 27:39-43

This chapter tells the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. After the mob had rammed a “crown” of long thorns deep into Jesus’ head, nailed him to the cross and left him hanging there in pain, they then turned to mockery, daring him to save himself and come down.

39 And those who passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads

40 and saying, “Thou that destroyest the temple and buildest it in three days, save thyself! If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking Him, with the scribes and elders said,

42 “He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver him now, if He will have him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

(Commentary by Anneta G.)

Could Jesus have saved himself? He had already performed countless miracles. Couldn’t he have removed himself from the cross, healed his own wounds and proved his divine power?

Yes, He could have. But instead, He had a greater mission: to pay the price for your sins and mine.

John 10:17-18 reads:

17 Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received from My Father.”

Jesus had the power to lay down His life, and He had the power to take it again for himself. He CHOSE to be the sacrifice for us, to be our Redeemer, and our Savior.

“Dear Heavenly Father, may we never forget the tremendous price Jesus has paid for our redemption. Help us today to cherish the cross upon which our Savior gave His all, and to always be grateful that He didn’t give in to the mockery and try to save Himself, but instead went all the way to pay the price for our sins.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.”
