Hebrews 12:1-2
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
[King James version]
Commentary from DML News App editor Anneta Griffee: I don’t usually include my name on these daily devotionals, but today I will, because it includes a personal story.
Each one of us very likely has someone we’ve loved who has already gone on to eternity. Whether it’s family or friends, we all have people whose faith we still draw inspiration from, whose influence still lives on in our own hearts. I like to think of them as my “cloud of witnesses.”
This week I’ve been sorting through some of my grandmother’s belongings, deciding what to save, what to discard, and what to sell. I thought it would be hard, but instead, it has given me so much peace, because even though she passed away a few years ago, it still feels like she’s here with me. And I’ve realized she always will be. Her influence, her faith, the sound of her voice… it’s all still part of the precious memories that I will forever cherish.
And just as my grandmother looked to Jesus, so will I. He is the author of our faith, the reason for our hope, and the source of our peace.
