Psalm 145:3–7 (NIV)
3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
his greatness no one can fathom.
4 One generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.
5 They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.
6 They tell of the power of your awesome works—
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
7 They celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.
(Commentary by Kat L)
How Great Thou Art
The greatness of God is something we hear a lot, but let’s stop for a moment to really marvel at His absolute might today.
For instance, something that always rocks me is the idea of colors. What an amazing God to have created something of such complexity and beauty for the world!
A song that always moves me and touches my soul is “How Great Thou Art” by Carl Boberg. It was originally a poem Boberg wrote in the late 19th century. Later, a missionary named Stuart Hine created the English version we know and love, but the really interesting thing is why he did that.
Hine was traveling through the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine, sharing the Gospel, when a terrible storm began. Hine watched the storm, listened to the claps of thunder, and was inspired to begin his translation.
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
God’s awesome power was on display. The lightning streaking across the sky, the wind whipping through the trees, the sounds of the incredible storm echoing through the mountains. It sends chills to think that we live in a world created by a God who is in control of all of that, and thought it into being.
Today as you go about your business, I hope you stop to admire something in God’s creation. He made that for you!
Dear Lord God, we thank you for blessing us with a world of color, sound, scent, and wonder. Help us remember You in all the details and in all that surrounds us, from the majestic clouds to the mighty ant, truly it all is wonderfully made. In Jesus name we pray, AMEN!
