1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
[King James version]
Commentary by Anneta G.
We are all sinners, and none of us are worthy of salvation through our own abilities. But Satan wants to make us think that we’re hopeless, that God can never forgive us, or that the sacrifice of Jesus is still not good enough to cleanse us.
But this verse assures us that if we are willing to confess our sin, and repent of it, God IS faithful to forgive and cleanse us.
It doesn’t mean we should go on living in our sin. The Lord wants us to allow Him to do a work in our hearts and lives, to make us more Christ-like. But it DOES mean that we’re NEVER hopeless. God wants us to come to him, regardless of our sin, regardless of our past, regardless of how bad we’ve messed up.
As the beloved hymn below says, “Just as I am, without one plea… but that thy blood was shed for me…. And that Thou biddest me come to Thee, oh Lamb of God, I come, I come…”
May the Lord guide us each today, and help us each to just put our lives into His hands, knowing we can come to Him just as we are, and let Him guide our choices and our spirit.
