Trusting God in the Midst of Change
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Life is rarely static. Seasons shift—jobs change, relationships evolve, health fluctuates, locations move, children grow and leave home, plans we carefully crafted sometimes dissolve. Change can feel disorienting, uncertain, and even frightening. Yet in those very moments, God invites us to something deeper: wholehearted trust.
Proverbs 3:5-6 doesn’t promise that trusting God will prevent change or make every transition painless, but that it’s a good trade: we release our limited understanding, and He directs our paths.
Consider these anchoring truths from Scripture:
God goes before you. “The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you…” (Deuteronomy 31:8, adapted). He is not surprised by the change; He is already present in the new place, preparing the way.
He remains constant. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). Relationships may shift, circumstances may alter, but His character, love, and faithfulness never waver.
He has good plans. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). Even when the path looks confusing to us, it is purposeful to Him.
He is making something new. “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19). What feels like loss or disruption may be God clearing space for fresh growth.
Every act of surrender is also an act of worship. When we say, “Not my understanding, Lord, but Yours,” we echo Jesus in the garden: “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). From that place of trust, peace often arrives—not because the circumstances have settled, but because our eyes are fixed on the One who holds them.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing grace and for the beautiful plans You have for my life. You see every change before I even say thank you. When my heart races with uncertainty, help me to trust You with all of it—not just the parts I can understand. Teach me to stop striving for control and instead rest in Your unchanging nature. Make my paths straight, even when they lead through unfamiliar territory. Remind me that You are good, that You are near, and that Your plans for me are filled with hope.
In Jesus’ steady, faithful name I pray, Amen.
