Come Away and Rest
“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’”
Mark 6:31 (NIV)
As we enter the season of busy schedules and social obligations, it’s a good time to reflect on what the Bible says about taking care of yourself amid such demands.
In the verse, we see that Jesus invites His busy disciples to find a quiet place to unwind. They had just returned from their first mission trip where they were busy preaching, healing, and casting out demons. Crowds pressed in from every side. They didn’t even have time to eat. Jesus looked at these men He loved and saw more than tired bodies; He saw souls on the edge of burnout. So He gave them a gentle command wrapped in an invitation: “Come with Me…to a quiet place…and get some rest.”
He still speaks those same words to us today.
Life has a way of crowding in with its deadlines, demands, disappointments, and decisions piling up until we feel like David in Psalm 55:6-8: “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest…far from the tempest and storm.”
Some days we just want to lock the door, silence the phone, and disappear for a while.
But notice where Jesus invites His disciples to retreat: not away from Him, but with Him. True rest is never found in mere isolation; it is found in His presence.
David knew this, too. After crying out for wings to fly away, he later wrote, “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7).
The Good Shepherd doesn’t just permit rest—He provides it. He leads us there Himself. When the storms rage and the crowds close in, Jesus still stands with the same tender invitation: “Come with Me.”
Take your exhaustion, anxiety, and problems to the shelter He provides, that still, quiet space in the chaos.
Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing my weariness before I even name it. Thank You for caring about my soul as much as my service. Quiet the storm inside me today. Lead me beside Your still waters. Teach me to rest—not just from my problems, but in You. Be my peace, my shelter, my refreshment. Amen.
