Psalm 51:1
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
The profound humility of Dr. William Carey, who requested a funeral sermon on Psalm 51:1 (“Have mercy upon me, O God…”), highlights that true intimacy with God is built on a foundation of unmerited grace, not self-righteousness.
Even the most devoted saints recognize their profound sinfulness and unworthiness, requiring God’s mercy not only for their overt sins but also for their best efforts – prayers, good works, and preaching.
Just as Old Testament Passover blood cleansed both dwellings and the holiest sanctuaries, the purification of Jesus’ blood is needed for our holiest things, for our own souls. We are “wretched, poor, and helpless worms,” but in our complete reliance on God’s inexhaustible mercy, we find the power to be restored.
Lord Jesus, thank You for today. We appreciate the many blessings You have provided. Have mercy on us, according to your lovingkindness and blot out our transgressions. We pray in Your name, AMEN.
