Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) backed a controversial program that brought 15,000 Haitian migrants to Springfield, Ohio, a city of about 59,000.
While pledging more resources to address the situation, DeWine expressed support for the program, stating the following:
“Sixteen countries, including Haiti, I believe we counted … citizens can come under the category of temporary protected status… Temporary protected status. That is what Haitians who are here. We have a long history in this country, throughout most of my life, maybe before, when we see a situation in a country that is dire, and we see people flee from that country or want to flee from that country. We have created special programs, special policies. When I was in junior high and then in high school, [it] wasn’t the same program, but we had policy in regard to people coming from Cuba. I want to be very clear, totally very clear, I’m not against this program. I’m not against this program.”
According to the Washington Examiner, the DeWine family operates a charity in Haiti. To assist Springfield, Gov. DeWine provided healthcare support and additional police for traffic control, addressing concerns about increased car crashes due to migrants’ unfamiliarity with local laws.
He also pledged $2.5 million in financial aid to the county health department and healthcare institutions over two years. The state has already provided resources for driver education, vaccines, health screenings, and translation services.
This afternoon, I outlined the support the state has been providing Springfield and Clark County related to the surge of Haitian migrants into the community. I also announced plans to expand primary healthcare access and traffic enforcement in the area.

The narrative in Springfield has been dominated by claims from some residents that Haitian migrants were eating geese, ducks, and even cats. AI-generated memes of Trump “saving cats” from migrants went viral. The Federalist obtained police audio of a resident reporting geese theft by migrants. Still, authorities have denied any reports of cats being taken, with local police saying they are unaware of such incidents.
