From the Associated Press: SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love of Utah, a daughter of Haitian immigrants who became the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, died Sunday.

She was 49.

She had undergone recent treatment for brain cancer and received immunotherapy as part of a clinical trial at Duke University’s brain tumor center. Her daughter said earlier this month that the former lawmaker was no longer responding to treatment.

Love served in U.S. Congress from 2015 to 2019, and was then hired by CNN as a political commentator in 2019.

Love’s family announced her death in the following statement posted to her X account late Sunday night:

Love Family: With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today. She was in her home surrounded by family.

In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward.

We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences. We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come.

Love’s daughter, Abigale, announced in a Facebook post on March 1 that she was “building an archive of special memories” with her mother.  It appears Abigale may have posted some of her mother’s earlier writings on social media for her over the last couple of weeks.

On March 11, a “goodbye message” written by Love was published by Deseret News. The essay was titled, “Mia Love: My living wish for the America I know.”

“Join me on this space each week as I share principles and memories from my journey in ‘The America I Know!’” a post on her X account reads.

Another message was posted to X on March 17. It reads:

My message this week is for you and your children. It is for my children. It is that you are qualified, not because of where you live, what you believe, what you earn, your race or gender or anything else – but by the content of your character.

From Qualified ( https://amazon.com/Qualified-Finding-Leading-Character-Empowering/dp/1668629259 ): Character counted in my home. It would be by the content of our character that we would be judged.

Character is forged over time… What we believe about ourselves influences the decisions we make, the opportunities we take, and the ones we don’t. If you don’t believe you can, you can’t. If you believe you are unworthy or unqualified, you won’t respond when the opportunity of a lifetime is presented to you.

The building of character is a cottage industry that happens in homes and communities.

I hope you can come to know with certainty that you are qualified because of the content of your character.

You have a story—own it. You have a voice—raise it. Then lead and help others do the same. You are qualified: by the content of your character.

Another message from Love was posted on her X account early Sunday morning, prior to her death, which include some powerful words of wisdom.

Whether you are raising your children or leading a team or contributing to your community there are seven things that everyone needs to know to find and raise their voice. I have shared these principles with young people on college campuses across the country. They apply everywhere.

• Purpose. Choose a purpose, a grand aspiration, a big goal, and move towards it relentlessly.
• Mastery over self. Discipline equals freedom. If you’re driven by impulse all your life, you will drift and go nowhere in the end.
• Learning from adversity. Failures are just failures. Failures should never define you, and they will refine you, and make you better if you stop and learn from them.
• Be a light: You must be confident enough to have rational, respectful conversations with people you don’t agree with. You can’t light a flame if you are too afraid to think for yourself. We have to get comfortable in uncomfortable situations.
• Time. Time can make drifting and negativity permanent. We all get 24-hours in a day – no more and no less – what we choose to do with the time is what will define us in the end.
• Harmony. In order for you to balance mental, spiritual, and physical aspects of your life, you must be the author of your life. It is up to you create the balance.
• Caution. Always act. AND – always think before you act. You need both caution and action.

Raising dreamers and helping others learn to lead themselves is really the test for all of us. Such a commitment to raise and lead, changes children, transforms communities and empowers nations.

I am so thankful for my parents, especially my dad, who helped me gain confidence in myself by helping me know what he saw in me. I am thankful to have tag-teamed with Jason in raising our children.

I am counting on each of you and all of you to find your voice, raise it, live with character, and lead the next generation.

One of Love’s final social media posts, which she appears to have personally written, was on July 22, just days after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

“After this past week, I’m all in on team Trump/Vance! They have a passionate vision of an American revival that enables all Americans to pursue their dreams,” Love wrote.

Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah), who represents the same District 4 in Utah which Love once represented, posted the following statement:

I’m heartbroken to hear of Mia’s passing. She was a trailblazer, a faithful servant, bright light in so many lives, and a dear friend. Our Utah communities mourn with the Love family, and we pray that they find peace in Heavenly Father’s love and comfort, and in the love Mia brought to all.

Mia served Utah’s 4th District with distinction, bringing passion, energy, and unwavering dedication to everything she did. It is a profound honor to follow in her footsteps and build upon the foundation she laid.

Today, while we grieve her loss, we also celebrate her tireless commitment to public service, her historic contributions, and the countless lives she touched through her work.

Fellow Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee paid tribute to Love, writing on X, “Please join me in praying for the Love family and remembering Mia Love as a friend, trailblazer, congresswoman, wife, mother, and patriot. May she rest in peace, and may the great things she worked for in this life inspire the people of Utah—and all Americans—to better serve each other, our families, and our country.”
