From Fox News: Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, has been living in a retirement facility, a source told Fox News on Sunday. The source also denied a local news report that said she was in a memory care facility.

Granger, who is retiring at the end of this congressional term, has largely remained absent from the Capitol in recent months, having last cast votes on July 24. She was not present for over 54% of votes this year.

The Dallas Express investigated the 81-year-old congresswoman’s absence, publishing a report on Friday that quoted a constituent of her district who said that Granger was residing in a memory care facility in Texas. The report was later picked up by other news outlets.

Fox News spoke with a source from Granger’s office who denied that Granger was in a memory care unit. The source told Fox News that Granger is in a retirement facility where memory care is provided, though not in the memory care unit itself.

Dallas Express writer Carlos Turcios posted a video and explained, “A Director for the senior living facility told us that “This is her home.” Congresswoman Granger has not been voting since July. Why have the public/constituents been left in the dark about the nature of her absence? Does CD12 have no representation?”

Turcios announced in an update, “Congresswoman Kay Grangers son told Dallas Morning that the congresswoman has been “having some dementia issues late in the year.” This comes two days after the @DallasExpress investigated and found Granger living in a senior care facility.”

“The question remains. Why was the public not informed of this? Why was there no Transparency? In the meantime, Congresswoman Granger and her staff stay on the taxpayer’s payroll until January 3rd, 2025,” Turcios added.

“While we need to pray for her and her family, it’s not ok for a member of congress to abandon their district and leave their constituents without representation. Be transparent about what is happening, and resign if you can’t perform your duties,” Turcios declared.

Ryan Girdusky commented, “This is very sad but people in DC knew it for some time. A friend in DC lived in the same building as Rep. Granger and said she could be found roaming the halls, asking people if they knew where she lived. Dementia is absolutely terrible.”

Elon Musk suggested, “Maybe we should have some basic cognitive test for elected officials? This is getting crazy …”

Reporter Jamie Dupree weighed in with more details in a series of posts:

Rep. Kay Granger R-TX did not run for reelection in 2024. She gave up her gavel as the chair of the House Appropriations Committee in April. The last time Granger voted was in July. No explanation has been offered by her office.

Granger’s cast her last House vote on July 24, 2024, roll call 389.

But during that time, Granger’s staff submitted ‘Extensions of Remarks’ in the Congressional Record – which make it look like the Texas Republican was still on Capitol Hill.

Granger did return to Capitol Hill for a Nov. 19 reception, as the House Appropriations Committee unveiled her portrait as the former chair of the panel. But while Granger was photographed with her colleagues, she did not cast any votes on the House floor that week.

Granger’s X account tweeted out a number of photos from that Capitol Hill reception, showing House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans helping to honor Granger.

Back in September, I had noted Granger’s prolonged absence from Congress. But inquiries did not draw a reply.

She did not vote after July 24. It does not appear that a formal ‘Leave of Absence’ was filed. And no public announcement was made about her health.

Have other members missed large chunks of time this year? Yes. Rep. Dwight Evans (D-PA) suffered a stroke in May and missed the rest of the year. He plans to be back on Jan. 3 for the start of the 119th Congress.

Another member who missed much of 2024 was Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ). He was diagnosed with cancer in February and did not return until after the November elections. Grijalva has already said he will retire after the next Congress.

All of us who have worked on Capitol Hill have seen members of Congress battling health problems and old age. Some handle it openly. Some like Rep. David Scott (D-GA) yell at reporters taking their picture in a wheelchair. Some hope you don’t notice.

In an interview with Face The Nation, Rep. Ton Gonzalez (R-Tex.) said he knew Granger wasn’t well and was often missing, but was not aware she was living in a senior care facility.

He noted that the same thing has happened on the other side of the aisle, and pointed to the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) as an example.
