MAJOR SETBACK: Judge Blocks Trump from Stripping FEMA Funds from Sanctuary States

2

From Breitbart: A federal judge is blocking President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from cutting off Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds to sanctuary states that refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In March, DHS issued new requirements for states seeking such FEMA funds, including making sure that state agencies cooperate with ICE rather than carrying out sanctuary policies to prevent agents from being able to take custody of criminal illegal aliens.

Following the DHS memo, sanctuary states like Illinois, California, and Maryland, among others, banded together to sue the Trump administration over the requirements that would force them to end their sanctuary policies to secure FEMA funds.

This week, District Judge William Smith, appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island by former President George W. Bush, sided with the sanctuary states in the case.

Axios reported:

Led by Illinois, 20 states and Washington, D.C. filed a lawsuit against DHS and FEMA for revising the terms of their funding in April.

The revised terms required states to share immigration status data with ICE and allow DHS access to detainees, among other things, according to the suit.

Rep. Michael Cloud (R-Tex.) said in March, “Americans are fed up with their tax dollars funding FEMA benefits for illegal immigrants—while local mayors of these sanctuary cities can’t even account for the tens of millions in federal aid that’s been sent to their own cities.”
