President Donald Trump has promised a spectacular yearlong birthday party to celebrate 250 years of American independence. He’s kicking off the festivities in Iowa today at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.
The event will feature “dazzling” displays of Americana and American history, musical performances and a fireworks show to cap the night, said U.S. Ambassador Monica Crowley, Trump’s liaison to the organizing group, America250.
Trump will also be celebrating the final passage of his sweeping tax cuts and spending package.
The House passed it through in a close vote of 218-214, and highlighting his agenda.
Organizers want the year of celebrations to unite the nation and bridge the gap between Democrats and Republicans. However, it’s a challenge given the country’s deep divisions, including the strong opposition from Democrats to Trump’s spending package.
“We’re gonna have a big, big celebration, as you know, 250 years,” Trump said about the birthday when he addressed an audience at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. “In some ways, I’m glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn’t be your president for that.”
