LIFE-CHANGING: Trendy soft drink loved by millions could ‘protect against bowel cancer’ in those at risk, doctors discover

From the Daily Mail: Coconut water might do more than quench your thirst—it could help ward off a disease that increases the risk of cancer, a study has found.

Experts believe that the tangy drink has the potential to keep the symptoms of ulcerative colitis—a chronic inflammatory bowel disease which can lead to bowel cancer—under control.

Speaking of the findings on Instagram, Dr Kunal Sood, an anesthesiologist from Maryland, USA, said: ‘Even though the study was just for ulcerative colitis patients, it may be a gentle, food-based tool to support gut health with your doctor’s guidance.’

Ulcerative colitis is a long-term condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed, causing painful ulcers to develop on the lining of the large intestine.

Common symptoms of the condition— which affects around 300,000 people in the UK and up to 900,000 in the US —include debilitating diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss.

The study was conducted by researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, who evaluated 95 patients experiencing mild-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC).

Barbara O’Neil, a health lecturer, shared a recipe on July 4 for a healthy treat containing coconut water:

Cooling off with these Blueberry Coconut Popsicles 🍯🫐Made with just coconut water, blueberries, lime, and a touch of honey. These popsicles hydrate with natural electrolytes, deliver antioxidants that support cognitive function, and offer a bright, lightly sweet flavor.

Ingredients:
* 1 cup blueberries
* ¾ cup coconut water
* 1 tbsp honey or agave
* 1 tsp lime juice

Instructions:
1. Blend all ingredients until smooth.
2. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed (some blueberries are more tart than others).
3. Pour into popsicle molds.
4. Freeze for at least 4–6 hours or overnight.

In March, O’Neill announced: “Coconut water contains electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, which can help you stay hydrated and prevent cramping during exercise. Coconut water also contains dietary fiber, which helps you feel full and may aid in weight loss. Additionally, coconut water is low in calories and has no fat or cholesterol.”

In September, O’Neill shared the following:
