Patriotism among Democrats has sharply declined in the first year of President Trump’s second term, pulling down overall national pride despite rising Republican enthusiasm.
A Gallup poll conducted June 2–19 found just 58% of Americans say they’re proud to be American—a record low. Only 36% of Democrats reported feeling extremely or very proud, down from 62% the year before. Pride among independents also dropped slightly, falling by seven points. The poll was taken before the recent successful U.S. strike on Iran.
Republicans report higher levels of pride in being American this year, with 92% expressing pride, up from 85% in 2024. Gallup notes GOP pride has remained consistently high, typically above 90%, with dips mainly occurring during Democratic presidencies. The only exceptions were 2016 and 2020–2024. National pride peaked after 9/11, exceeding 90% overall, but has steadily declined since, especially after the Iraq War and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The drop in national pride continues to be primarily driven by Democrats, while Republicans remain consistently proud, suggesting patriotism is central to GOP identity. Gallup also found pride declines by generation, with only 41% of Gen Z adults expressing pride in being American, the only age group where a minority feels that way.
Gallup has research out about the state of American patriotism.
A majority of Republicans and Independents are proud to be an American, but ever since 2016, Democrats have been in free fall (with a slight Biden bump).
