The Los Angeles Fire Department issued a desperate plea Tuesday evening for all off-duty firefighters to report in, as a raging inferno has already spread to nearly 3,000 acres and is threatening nearly 15,000 buildings.

The Palisades Fire, in the wealthy Los Angeles area of Pacific Palisades, has forced about 30,000 people to evacuate, and the out-of-control fire is being fueled by strong Santa Ana winds.

“All #LAFD members currently off-duty are to call the DOC 213-576-8962 with their availability for recall,” the LAFD announced in a social media post.

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who lives in a separate Los Angeles neighborhood, commented, “Wow. The LA fire Department is so strapped for resources they are asking for any firefighters out there to call the hotline below & potentially come in to help, 213-576-8963.”

“I’ve covered fires in LA for years, including catastrophic ones, & I’ve never seen that happen before.”

In another post at around 7:30 pm PT, the fire department announced that the evacuation area had been expanded.

Sadly, the Palisades Charter High School has burned.

FoxLA reporter Matthew Seedorff shared chilling video footage as he watches homes burning all around him.

“Devastation all around. I’ve lost count of the number of buildings we’ve seen on fire. This is Radcliffe Ave in Pacific Palisades, CA,” Seedorff reported.

“I just drove over to the east side of the #PalisadesFire, which is tearing across the hills northeast of the Palisades. Entire ridge line is burning. Seeing multiple tankers come in to try to hit it w/ retardant,” Melugin announced.

In a video he shared, a plane drops the retardant chemical, but the wind carries it away, totally missing the flames.

A new fire has started in the Pasadena area.

And another fire reportedly in Altadena:

CBS News reporter Jonathan Vigliotti shared more footage of the horror:

“Frantic police, overwhelmed by the scale of this disaster, now blocking off all access to Palisades. A wall of flames and explosions are on the other side of their security line,” Vigliotti announced.

“This is Bowdoin St in Pacific Palisades. Every home is on fire. Crews aren’t trying to save them. They’re trying to put out flames before they ignite other neighborhoods,” he added.

“Neighborhood after neighborhood… GONE. This is the heart of the Palisades,” Vigliotti wrote.

He said the firefighters aren’t even trying to save the homes. They’re just trying to keep the flames from spreading, as the wind is carrying the sparks up to a mile ahead, starting more fires.

“Shaping up to be really rough night folks. We are looking at potentially massive structure losses if these extreme winds come in tonight as advertised. Already burning deep into residential areas,” Fox News reporter Bill Melugin announced.
