From The Hill: Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) confirmed Tuesday she’s “seriously considering” a bid to succeed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), who announced Monday that he was dropping his campaign for a third term.
“I love my job, I love my state and I’m seriously considering it,” the North Star State’s senior senator told CNN.
A source close to Klobuchar previously told NewsNation she was weighing whether to jump into the race.
Walz announced Monday that he is dropping his reelection bid amid a sweeping fraud scandal that prosecutors say could reach $9 billion. He told reporters Tuesday that he will not resign, declaring it would happen only “over my dead body.”
Several Democrats told The Hill they believe Klobuchar would largely clear the field in a gubernatorial primary if she runs. Other potential contenders include Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon and Attorney General Keith Ellison. If Klobuchar were to win the governorship, she would appoint a successor to her Senate seat, with a special election to fill the remainder of her term in 2027. Some speculate that the appointee could be Walz.
