FROM DAILY MAIL: Grammy-winning Pras Michel is sentenced to 14 years in prison after he’s convicted of funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
Fugees rapper Michel, 53, was found guilty on November 20 of having orchestrated the illegal foreign lobbying scheme on behalf of fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Low.
Michel obtained over $120-million from Low and steered some of that money through straw donors to Obama´s campaign. Michel also tried to end a Justice Department investigation of Low, tampered with two witnesses, and perjured himself at trial, prosecutors said.
Michel was convicted of ten counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government, in an April 2023 trial that included testimony from Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Michel was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison term.
The artist has appealed to President Donald Trump for clemency, telling TMZ earlier this year, “I hope [Trump will turn an eye on me.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Trump was considering a pardon. The White House declined to confirm that.
Michel’s team has stated that “all available options” are being explored.
