Comcast plans to spin off several cable channels, including MSNBC, CNBC, USA, E!, Oxygen, and SyFy, following a sharp decline in MSNBC’s ratings.
As reported in the New York Times, the move comes after MSNBC’s viewership dropped 53% post-Trump’s 2024 election victory over Kamala Harris. According to the Wall Street Journal, the networks slated for spinoff generate approximately $7 billion in revenue. NBC, Peacock, and Bravo will remain under Comcast.
MSNBC, which frequently promoted debunked claims of Trump-Russia collusion and featured figures like Rep. Adam Schiff, has faced declining viewership amid shifts in political narratives. Ratings for MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” dipped after host Joe Scarborough revealed he and co-host Mika Brzezinski met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago for the first time in seven years to “restart communications.”
Comcast also announced leadership changes: Mark Lazarus as CEO of the new venture, Donna Langley as chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios, and Matt Strauss overseeing sports, ad sales, and distribution.
