From CBS News: As millions of Americans gather Monday to celebrate Labor Day, federal data shows how President Trump’s immigration policies are reshaping the U.S. workforce.
The number of immigrant workers in the U.S. has declined by 1.2 million from January through the end of July, according to preliminary Census Bureau data, analyzed by the Pew Research Center. That figure includes people who are in the country illegally as well as legal residents.
The labor market shakeup comes as the flow of immigrants into the U.S. has slowed significantly under Mr. Trump, who campaigned on a promise to deport millions of immigrants working illegally. He has said he is focusing deportation efforts on “dangerous criminals,” but most people detained by ICE have no criminal convictions. At the same time, the number of illegal border crossings has plunged under his policies.
Pew Research shared the following data in the August 21 report, in reference to ALL immigrants – both legal and illegal:
- In January 2025, Pew claims 53.3 million immigrants lived in the U.S. – the larges number ever recorded
- By June 2025, 51.9 million immigrants lived in the U.S. – a 1.4 million decrease
- 15.4% of all U.S. residents were immigrants in June 2025, down from a recent historic high of 15.8%.
- 19% of the U.S. labor force were immigrants in June 2025, down from 20% and by over 750,000 workers since January.
Again, 19% of the U.S. workforce is still made up of immigrants.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced in her Labor Day message on X Monday that jobs are now going to American citizens.
“This Labor Day, America works for Americans again. 100% of all new job gains have gone to U.S. citizens, and 2.5 million Americans are back at work since January. Under Biden, 88% of all jobs went to foreign born workers. Meanwhile DHS reforms have saved taxpayers over $13.2 billion. President Trump and I are putting the American worker FIRST. Happy Labor Day!” she wrote.
