Democrat Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania is sounding more like a Republican every day.
During a town hall event Wednesday night, he slammed Democrats over their violent rhetoric, and slammed them again over the government shutdown. He also commended and defended President Trump.
From the Washington Examiner: Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) defended the supporters of President Donald Trump on Wednesday night while speaking at the NewsNation Town Hall at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It was the latest comment from the Democratic senator that runs counter to the messaging of other elected officials in his party.
After years of Trump and his supporters being labeled “fascist” or called “Nazis” since Trump became the Republican front-runner for the presidency in the 2016 presidential campaign, Fetterman rebuked such insults, claiming that many of his loved ones were Trump supporters and such characterizations were untrue.
“I’m the only Democrat in my family,” said Fetterman. “I grew up in a conservative part of Pennsylvania. And I grew up, I knew, and I loved people that voted for President Trump. But they are not fascists. They’re not Nazis. They’re not trying to destroy the Constitution and those things.”
During the bipartisan town hall event, Fetterman was on a panel with News Nation’s Chris Cuomo, as well as Stephen A. Smith and Bill O’Reilly.
O’Reilly listed off a number of issues where Fetterman leans right, and asked him why is he even still a Democrat? Or why not just an Independent?
Fetterman acknowledged President Trump’s victory and support in Pennsylvania, and said the far-left extremism is why Trump won.
“I campaigned across Pennsylvania for Kamala Harris,” he explained. “It was difficult! You could feel the energy there…That’s what I tried to explain to my party. I’m trying to explain right NOW – this is why we LOST.”
“I refuse to follow that [extremism] even if it’s gonna cost me support in parts of the base,” he said. “I REFUSE to call people Nazis or fascists. I would never compare anybody — anybody to Hitler.”
“Like Charlie Kirk, all I could say is let people grieve — give people the space,” he continued. “I’m not going to use that terrible thing and that assassination to make my argument and try to put out my views.”
“It’s like, my God, he’s a father that had his neck blown out by a bullet. And now people have forgotten: President Trump was in my state — was shot in the head. Could you imagine where our nation would be if he were hit in the same way as Kirk? We really got to turn the temperature down,” he added.
Fetterman is one of only three Democrat senators who have voted in favor of the Republican-backed clean government funding bill, and said he knows some Democrats are angry with him because of it.
“I can’t vote for shutting the government down,” he insisted.
Further calling out Democrats, Fetterman said, “I would love to have a conversation about extending the tax credits for health care. Absolutely. But I would remind everybody, too, this was DESIGNED by the Democratic Party to expire at the end of the year. This is NOT something taken by the Republicans. They were designed to expire.”

Fetterman’s remarks left some jaws on the floor, and has set social media abuzz. Below is just a sampling:
I remember distinctly in 2024 Fetterman explaining Trump’s unique connection to white working class voters in PA.
It’s something the GOP must replicate if it wants to win again.

I have never been, nor will I probably ever be a Dem but I can absolutely respect Sen Fetterman. I don’t want him to switch parties, I want him to be the rep his party needs.
At least so the country can get back to some semblance of normalcy— Katie Miller (@kmiller112001) October 16, 2025
John Fetterman, the last honest Democrat.

Whoever thought @JohnFetterman would rise to be the voice of reason in DC?
Kudos to him. Now all he has to do is to convince the rest of his party to abandon their destructive agenda— Jim (@jim_knipe) October 16, 2025
He sounds more like a republican every day

I wish there were more men like John Fetterman on the left who were willing to be honest and fair, even in their political disagreements.
It’s honesty like this that will help us find common ground and move America forward together.

12 months ago Sen. John Fetterman didn’t really have a voice, and few doubted he ever would yet now, he’s the only member I see within the Democrat Party having a voice and with that, a voice of reason…

I was one of those liberals who believed left-wing media when they called Republicans fascists and compared them to Nazis. Then I started having conversations with them and discovered they were not at all like they were portrayed. After that, I stopped listening to the media.

John Fetterman is the most sane Democrat in the country. I’m not even sure who is in second place behind him. But this is well said: pic.twitter.com/Gx7WuKTUCw
