INVASIVE: Company tells employees they will begin to track their location to monitor productivity

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) plans to monitor employee locations to enforce a stricter return-to-office policy starting next year.

The U.K. branch will now require staff to be in the office or with clients for at least three days a week, up from the previous two to three days. According to an internal email shared by a PwC spokesperson, employees will receive monthly updates on their location data.

PwC U.K. Managing Partner Laura Hinton stated that the new policy, effective January, aims to balance office and client time, reflecting the company’s focus on client service and employee development. The policy will give staff time to adjust, and if an employee repeatedly violates it, PwC will first seek to understand the reasons behind the breaches.

Following the end of the pandemic, many tech companies, including Amazon, are mandating a return to the office. Amazon’s 2023 policy requires employees to be in the office three days a week, and non-compliance could potentially lead to termination or missed promotion opportunities.
