From Daily Mail: Donald Trump reined in Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after an icy White House meeting overseen by Chief of Staff Susie Wiles following another deadly shooting involving an immigration agent in Minnesota.
The internal scrutiny of Noem intensified after the fatal shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday, an incident she characterized as an act of ‘domestic terror’, putting her at odds with Trump.
The President grilled Noem over her handling and initial response to the shooting during their late-night meeting, reports say. Noem’s adviser and rumored lover Corey Lewandowski was by her side at the Oval Office summit.
According to the New York Post, Noem “demanded a two-hour meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office late Monday after she was elbowed aside amid backlash over her handling of the latest deadly shooting in Minneapolis by ICE agents.”
The meeting allegedly took place after Trump revealed that border czar Tom Homan would be taking charge of Homeland Security efforts in Minneapolis after Pretti’s death.
Noem has faced calls to quit or face impeachment after she branded Pretti a “domestic terrorist” who had charged at officers with a gun, the Post reported.
An investigation will take place, however there are several videos from multiple angles showing the shooting.
Noem has reportedly been told to focus on securing the Southern Border, not on interior immigration enforcement operations, while White House Border Czar Tom Homan handles the Minnesota crackdown.
“Noem’s law enforcement ally on the ground, Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino, was also withdrawn along with scores of his agents,” the Mail reports. “Initially, Noem and Lewandowski elevated Bovino to oversee high-profile immigration raids in U.S. urban centers including Los Angeles, Chicago and, most recently, Minneapolis.”
Immigration agents aligned with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) typically handle such raids, not Border Patrol, according to the Mail.
