Texas governor Greg Abbott is taking a very different approach than California’s Gavin Newsom. At the first hint of disruption, he’s laying down the law.
After learning that a protest was planned in San Aatonio, he made it clear that things would not spiral out of control and announced that the Texas National Guard would be deployed.
From NBC News:
“Texas is a law-and-order state, and we will use every tool that we can to ensure order across our state,” Abbott said at a question-and-answer session at an event for an unrelated bill signing.
He declined to provide details about what tactics would be used, saying, “You will see them arise in response to what we see on the ground.”
He also said law enforcement officials are prepared to make arrests.
“You break the law, you cross the line, you will be arrested,” he said. “There is freedom of speech. However, if, in your protest, you damage somebody’s property or you harm an individual, that’s violating the law, and you will be arrested for it.”
Texas National Guard will be deployed to locations across the state to ensure peace & order.
Peaceful protest is legal.
Harming a person or property is illegal & will lead to arrest.@TexasGuard will use every tool & strategy to help law enforcement maintain order. https://t.co/rS8b5zgE3T

We’re in San Antonio on vacation. Outside the hotel, someone hacked a traffic sign. The @OfficialAlamo has heavy police presence. Civilians with AR-15-style rifles nearby. @TexasGuard standing by on charter buses. I can’t explore more. My wife won’t let me. pic.twitter.com/QOJVtI3JdH

In Nebraska, agents were assaulted while executing a warrant.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and other federal partners were assaulted in Omaha.
“Yesterday, an illegal alien from Honduras brandished a weapon and assaulted federal agents and officers who were doing their job: protecting American citizens, the public and businesses who are being victimized through identity fraud,” ICE acting Director Todd Lyons reported. “Let’s be clear — this wasn’t just someone ‘out of status.’ This was a violent criminal who attacked law enforcement while they were serving the public, which is why the term ‘criminal alien’ is a distraction.
“If you’re here illegally, you’ve already broken the law. When you break the law by coming here illegally and then threaten and assault federal officers on top of that — you’re a threat, plain and simple.”
It appears that agents met with opposition as they tried to leave the raid, but the agents put an end to the nonsense.
Fox News reports:
During the raid, ICE detained more than 70 illegal immigrants, some of whom had local warrants for their arrests, prior DUI convictions or had previously been deported, the agency said.
Many of the 70 people detained Wednesday may now face additional federal charges, including fraud and misuse of visas, permits and other documents; assaulting a federal officer; resisting arrest; illegal reentry; and/or misuse of Social Security numbers, ICE said.

In California, state leaders continued to condemn ICE operations, even as they led to the arrest of a rape suspect.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass joined 30 city officials at a Wednesday press conference claiming ICE agents were targeting immigrants with no criminal records.
But over in Baldwin Park, federal agents were busy nabbing “an illegal Mexican national wanted for rape and other violent crimes,” according to Fox News. The agents apparently caught up with Arturo Terron-Quevedo near “what appears to be the City Hall building,” the site reported.
From Fox News:
A senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official told Fox an ICE Los Angeles officer and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) criminal investigator made the arrest after Terron-Quevedo was released from local custody.
He has pending charges for rape, assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily injury, and inflicting corporal injury, an ICE spokesperson confirmed.
Just days before, on Sunday, the City of Baldwin Park and Baldwin Park Police Department released a statement about the city’s “long history of supporting its immigrant community, regardless of immigrants’ legal status.”
Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila aadded to the statement, writing, “As Mayor, I speak and advocate for all members of our community, including our undocumented immigrant residents.”
“The City firmly supports your membership in our community. I recognize that for many this is a scary time, and I hope you know that the City of Baldwin Park and Baldwin Park Police Department support the wellbeing of all our residents.”
It turned out to be a very scary day for Terron-Quevedo, as the law finally caught him. He is seen in the video below, handcuffed and marched away.
