Joy Behar claimed Tuesday that Stephen Colbert’s show was canceled because President Trump is targeting comedians who mock him, likening Trump to a king silencing court jesters.
Co-host Sunny Hostin called the cancellation, reportedly due to low ad revenue, “the dismantling of our democracy.”
“If the comedians are being attacked, then that means our Constitution is being dismantled,” Hostin continued, ignoring the financial issues with running the show and suggesting that Colbert had been canceled only because he was opposed to Trump. “What are we going to do as a country? We must protect our Constitution and we must protect our democracy. This is bigger than just the cancellation of a television show.”
Sara Haines acknowledged Colbert’s cancellation may have been financial, citing declining ad revenue due to streaming competition. Hostin argued Colbert brought in $60 million in ads but omitted the show’s $100 million cost. Whoopi Goldberg defended Colbert, saying she doesn’t believe The Late Show is truly gone.
