From Fox News: Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City, identified as “Black or African American” on his 2009 Columbia University application even though he now says he does not consider himself Black, The New York Times reported Thursday.
According to The Times, the internal data came from a leaked database of past Columbia applications which was part of a recent hack targeting the Ivy League school.
Mamdani, then a high school senior, also checked “Asian” and reportedly wrote in “Ugandan” in the space for additional background. He was ultimately not accepted to Columbia even though his father is a professor at the elite school.
The now 33-year-old mayoral candidate says he identifies as an “American born in Africa,’ but says he doesn’t recall ever identifying as being Black or African American.
For the college application, Mamdani claims he checked multiple boxes in an effort to describe his complex background, not to gain an advantage in admissions.
“Even though these boxes are constraining,” Mamdani said, “I wanted my college application to reflect who I was.”
Columbia used to apply race to help determine admissions, and that system wasn’t struck down until 2023. That is when the Supreme Court effectively ended affirmative action, ruling that race cannot be a factor in admissions decisions.
With Mamdani’s race claims coming to light now, social media users have blasted him.
One X user, podcaster Alec Lace, posted images of 4 prominent Democrats who have made questionable claims. One was Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Mass., who claimed to be part American Indian, prompting a massive outpouring of doubt, including from President Donald Trump who nicknamed her Pocahontas.
Former President Joe Biden was also pictured in Lace’s post, captioned “sharp as a tack,” an apparent reference to Biden’s claims of having no issues even as he showed signs of cognitive deterioration.

Another user opined, “I think all this Mamdani college scandal proves is that the far left has no principles. If they like you, they’ll make excuses for anything. If they don’t like you, nothing you do will be good enough.”
